Borussia Dortmund Midfielder Julain Weigl has worked hard this season to become a regular in the Borussia Dortmund starting XI.

The 21 Year old has so far made 37 appearances for BVB and is a valued member of a young and growing Dortmund side.

Most recently Weigl was a part of the Germany which beat England 1-0 in Dortmund.

Weigl has made 5 senior appearances for the German National team.

As a defensive minded midfielder Weigl has grown and developed his game throughout his time at Dortmund to become a promising young midfielder. He’s done well competing alongside fellow German Gonzalo Castro who has featured in 8 less games than Weigl in all competitions this season.

Weigl’s style of play is signature of many young highly rated midfielders to come from the Bundesliga like Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich. Weigl is known for his ability to play a pass, win the ball back from a deep midfield position, and also has a keen eye for goal from long range.

The holding man has only 1 goal to his name this season and 0 assists, but taking a deeper look into his stats they’re far from disappointing.

With regards to his strengths, Weigl makes an average of 74 passes per game. With a success rate of 90.6%.

As a defensive midfielder, breaking up play is important. The young German makes an average of 2.2 tackles per game, also making an average of 2.1 interceptions per game. This may not seem like a lot but compared to his midfield partner Gonzalo Castro who makes on average 1.7 tackles per game and 0.9 interceptions, it shows how Weigl is a useful addition to the midfield particularly alongside the more attacking Castro.

Weigl stands out as yet another young disciplined German midfielder and if stays fit and in the Dortmund side I’m sure he’ll develop into a key member of the national side and a great player.

If he can add a few goals and assists to his game it would add to his many talents but as a defensive minded midfielder this isn’t crucial. He has the makings of another fantastic player developed by Borussia Dortmund.
